Flood: Watch vs. Warning

2/23/2022 (Permalink)

With the heavy and consistent rain we have seen over the last couple of days, areas of localized flooding have been reported. Flooding is one of the most common disasters from coast-to-coast, and can cause massive amounts of damage to your property. During intense storms, it is important to be mindful of where you are and of road conditions. Although, before we can even get into flood preparation and safety tips, it is important to understand the difference between a flood watch and a flood warning.

Flood Watch

When rain is anticipated for an extended period or a rising storm surge is rolling in, a flood watch is issued. This means that weather conditions could cause flooding. However, a flood watch does not necessarily mean flooding will occur, but that preparations should be made.

Flood Warning

When flooding is inevitable, a flood warning is issued. A floor warning means flooding is expected or signs of flooding have already been reported in your area. Knowing the difference between a flood watch and a flood warning could save your life and help you better prepare your home before the storm hits.
