Fire Extinguisher Instructions on how to use a fire extinguisher

Know how to safely operate a fire extinguisher!

Thinking about the possibility of a fire in your home can be nothing short of overwhelming. After all, we keep our most cherished things, including documents, photos, and keepsakes tucked away in different corners of our home. A home that we have put hard work and sweat into and are emotionally tied to. However, a house fire is a reality that could strike at any given time and we should all be prepared. We at SERVPRO of Dyersburg/Union City hope you never have to experience one, but if the unimaginable happens, we are prepared and here to help.

We are experts in cleaning the damage left by smoke and fire in your home or office, and we work endlessly to ensure the job is done as efficiently as possible.

It is very important to practice fire safety and preparedness. A fire extinguisher may help prevent, contain, or reduce fire or smoke damage. Have one that is easily accessible, but just as importantly, KNOW how to use it!

SERVPRO of Dyersburg/Union City wants to share these tips from FEMA. You can try to fight a small fire only if:

  • You have alerted others in the home or building that there is a fire
  • Someone has called the fire department
  • You are physically able to use a fire extinguisher
  • The fire is small and contained (like a wastebasket)
  • You are safe from the fire’s smoke
  • You have a clear escape route

How to Use a Fire Extinguisher: SERVPRO of Dyersburg/Union City suggests you remember PASS:

  • Pull the pin. Hold the extinguisher with the nozzle pointing away from you and release the locking mechanism.
  • Aim at the base of the fire.
  • Squeeze the lever slowly and evenly.
  • Sweep the nozzle side to side.

If you experience damage due to smoke or fire, no matter how small or large, call SERVPRO of Dyersburg/Union City at 731-627-6251 to help remediate the situation and restore the damage in your home!
